I had the privilege to take part in the Future Champs International Tournament 2013 as part of the Media and PR team. The Tournament is in it’s fifth year and this was my first time being involved. It was held at the Nike Football Center in Soweto. The tournament was a week long (25 March -30 March) and the players got one day off to tour the beautiful Gauteng.
There were 4 South African teams in the tournament and eight international teams.
SAFA Sedibeng (SA)
Sporting Lisbon Academy (Portugal)
JHB Secondary (SA)
Everton FC (England)
Aspire Academy (Qatar)
University of South Africa (SA)
Young Zebras (Botswana)
Club Tijuana (Mexico)
SuperSport United Academy (SA)
Clube Atletico (Brazil)
Bridge FC (Nigeria)
Out of all the teams these 4 international teams went through to the Semi-Finals: played on Friday 29 March 2013:
Sporting Lisbon Academy
Clube Atletico Mineiro
Everton FC played against the Brazilian team, Clube Atletico Mineiro, and they beat them 1-0 to qualify for the final.
SuperSport United and Aspire Academy of Qatar had a brawl during their match yesterday(Friday ) and that lead to both teams being disqualified. By default University of South Africa and K-Stars moved to 5th and 6th place.
Club Tijuana took the 2013 Future Champions Gauteng Cup after played a 1-1 draw against Everton FC and beat them 4-3 on penalties.
It was really an amazing experience for me and I enjoyed it all. I got to make new friends and associates, understand sports more and all that goes on behind the scenes of organising a huge event. As a person who wants to get into the PR industry it was very informative and I thank those who gave me this opportunity.
Cant wait for next year!!!!
